Fire and law enforcement officials from Alpena and Alpena County, as well as local business leaders and private donors, meet at the Alpena Public Safety Facility on Friday to check out the city’s new ice rescue craft, also known as a “banana boat.” Two of the inflatable crafts were built thanks to donations from local banking agencies and private donations from Ron and Cheryl Lemke. Alpena County Sheriff’s Office Sgt. J.P. Ritter spearheaded the fundraising effort that led to the purchase of two of the rescue apparatus. The second boat was donated to the Alpena Township North Side Fire Station.
