Alpena Public Schools hires 9 new staff members

ALPENA — A number of people have been hired the past month to work for Alpena Public Schools.

Natalie Gentry was approved by the district Board of Education to work part-time as an instructional coach in central office. Superintendent John VanWagoner said the funds for that position are federal at-risk funds.

“We have some movement still going on so we’re hoping next month to have more,” VanWagoner said.

The following were hired as instructional assistants:

∫ Kiersten Dowling at Ella White Elementary School

∫ Sarah Kowalewsky and Kristi Blackaby at Sanborn Elementary School

∫ Jennifer Minton at Alpena High School

∫ Emma Barber at Lincoln Elementary School

Kristen Sherwood was hired as secretary at Besser and Ella White elementaries.

VanWagoner said the district cannot have two full-time secretaries at Besser and Ella White because of budget constraints, so Sherwood will work half days at both schools.

“There are many spots across the district that could use support,” he said. “We just try to run as tight of a shift as we can.”

Kristine Johnson was hired as a secretary at Wilson Elementary School.

Bradley Anderson was hired as a lead and afternoon custodian at Sunset Elementary School and other schools.

The following resigned from the district:

∫ Justin Cook as a relief bus driver for transportation

∫ Natalie Dingeman as an instructional assistant at Alpena High

∫ Jolee Greer as an instructional assistant at Thunder Bay Junior High School

∫ Christine O’Neil, secretary, scheduler, and registrar at the junior high

VanWagoner said O’Neil worked quite a while for the district.

“We’ll miss her,” VanWagoner said.

∫ approved the City of Alpena’s agreement to collect 2020 summer taxes at 82 cents a parcel.
