Man dies in Sunday fire

ALPENA — A man was killed Sunday morning when his Alpena Township residence was destroyed by fire.

The man, whose name has not yet been released, was found by firefighters inside his Lakeview Drive trailer after a fire that fully engulfed his home was extinguished enough for firefighters to enter safely, Alpena Township Fire Chief Dave Robbins said.

The fire was reported about 4:30 a.m. Troopers from the Michigan State Police-Alpena Post were the first to arrive, but were prevented from entering the home because of the extent of the fire, which was blazing from every window, according to Robbins.

Firefighters from the Alpena Township and Alpena departments extinguished the fire within about 10 minutes after arrival, and were informed by a neighbor the trailer may have been occupied.

Inside, firefighters found the resident, a double amputee in his mid-60s. An autopsy will determine the exact cause of death, Robbins said.

According to protocol in a fire involving a fatality, Robbins contacted the Michigan State Police Fire Investigation Unit.

MSP fire investigators and a K9 unit with a dog specially trained to detect signs of arson responded to the scene.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, but foul play has been ruled out, Robbins said.

Incidental damage to a neighbor’s home and a back garage also resulted from the fire.

Firefighters and law enforcement officers who responded to the deadly fire have access to a city-provided Critical Incident Stress Management team, made of representatives of Community Mental Health and peers from their fields who understand the trauma involved in such incidents and can help define appropriate ways to respond.
