Newman leads Zonta Walk

Cassie Newman, in center, was the honorary chair for the 2019 Zonta Walks for Women Breast Cancer Awareness walk and 5K run, held Saturday morning starting from the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center. Newman, who has dealt with breast cancer for the past 12 years, is holding hands with her niece Bella Kaitting on the left, and her daughter Riley Newman on the right.

Originally diagnosed in 2007 at age 26, she went through chemotherapy, had a double mastectomy and went into remission, then had her daughter several years later. Six months after giving birth, she found out her cancer had come back in February of 2015. Despite having kicked cancer once and having it come back, Newman can almost always be found with a big smile on her face.

“I guess I just look at life, like, I can’t control what happens, so I just make the best of it and try to live life as much as I can, and keep going,” said Newman, who has been married to her loving and supportive husband Tom for seven years.
