Bomb threat at Health Department office in Harrisville required police detonation

HARRISVILLE — A police bomb squad on Sept. 6 had to detonate at least one homemade explosive device left at the District Health Department No. 2’s Harrisville office, Health Officer Denise Bryan told District Health Department No. 4’s board on Tuesday.

The News had earlier reported bottles containing an unknown substance had forced an evacuation of the Health Department office, but police did not reveal that the items were believed to be homemade explosive devices or that the bomb squad had to detonate any device.

Bryan said Tuesday the five employees who work at the office arrived to work that day to find profanity and vandilism on the building. The employees were instructed to call 911, she said.

Shaving cream found at the site was contaminated with chemicals, she said, and a hazardous materials team was called. The Michigan State Police bomb squad was subsequently called in to assist.

Bryan told the health board on Tuesday she would update them if an arrest is made.
