Attorneys: Winfield trial to be delayed

ALPENA — The trial of former Alpena Public Schools teacher Heather Winfield will be postponed, lawyers say.

After conferring with both sides during a morning conference today, Judge Michael Mack indicated he will allow a delay of Winfield’s trial on sexual assault charges to be delayed to give both sides opportunity to collect and process evidence.

The jury trial was scheduled to begin Sept. 27.

Attorneys requested the adjournment last week but were told Tuesday the September trial date would not be changed, with Mack citing the three years attorneys already had to pursue investigations.

Attorneys met with Mack again, explaining that the information currently being gathered, which is extensive, is based on new technology which only recently become available, according to Assistant Prosecutor Cynthia Muszynski.
