Reynolds has new objectives for AMA ESD

ALPENA — Scott Reynolds, superintendent of the Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District, has a new objective he has to complete by March 2020.

The ESD Board of Education approved Thursday for Reynolds to identify a plan to realign the district’s budget and its out of deficit spending.

Reynolds said the district completed a three-year projection last year and the third year showed significant deficit spending of roughly $500,000.

“We have a healthy fund balance, but anyone knows that over time, if you continue to spend more than you’re bringing in, that fund balance is gone so it’s a responsibility that I have to make sure that doesn’t happen,” Reynolds said. “We were projecting deficit spending over the course of a three-year budget, that’s something that we want to work on now to remedy rather than wait and have to make drastic changes.”

He said completing this objective will help the district stay in a good fiscal position and continue to serve students and the schools.

The objective also will help the district be mindful of budget spending. Reynolds said items will come up, like renovations to buildings and different projects that become essential.

Reynolds proposed four potential objectives at the district’s June board meeting, and he said this objective was deemed the most important.

The other three objectives are identifying the district’s administrative team’s effective outcomes for the work they complete, developing and implementing a plan to increase the district’s legislative interaction, and developing an administrative mentoring program to aid in succession planning.

“It was about identifying objectives that should a part of my evaluation,” Reynolds said.
