ALPENA — Lots of rain hit Alpena Monday, ultimately breaking a record that stood for 75 years.

Alpena got 1.32 inches of rain on Monday, breaking the previous record for rainfall on Aug. 5 of 0.87 inches, which was set in 1944. Dan Cornish, meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Gaylord, said the rain Monday was not normal for this time of year and was mainly from the strong storms that occurred.

“When you get strong storms, especially storms that terrain over the same area, kind of like what happened in Alpena yesterday afternoon into the evening … you get stronger storms like that and heavy rainfall over an extended period of time,” Cornish said. “It’s incredibly rare to get rainfall over an inch.”

Alpena’s average rainfall for Aug. 5 is 0.1 inches of rain, Cornish said.

There was a flash-flood warning for southern Presque Isle County Monday night because of the rain, Cornish said. He said the Weather Service received no reports of flooding for Alpena.

Other cities in northern Michigan that were hit with lots of rain were Sault Ste. Marie, with 0.49 inches, Gaylord, with 0.36 inches, and Traverse City, with 0.36 inches, according to the National Weather Service.

Cornish said Alpena was supposed to be hit Tuesday with some pop-up showers, but those stayed south of Alpena.

Looking into the rest of the week, Cornish said more thunderstorms will happen tonight through Thursday morning. He said that is the only chance of rain this week for Alpena.

After the rain, Cornish said temperatures will cool down several degrees to the lower 70s for the weekend.

“It will be a nice weekend ahead,” he said.
