Montmorency County Fair kicks off next week

ATLANTA — The Montmorency County Fair kicks off Tuesday at the Montmorency County Fairgrounds, with a little something for everyone.

Entry to the fair is free, however, there is a $5 fee for parking.

Colleen Gamb, secretary for the county’s fair board, said they have a number of family events, as well as events for young children, teens, and adults. Gamb said a princess party will be held at noon Wednesday, a teen bubble and fog dance is planned for 8-11 p.m. Thursday and Friday, and the bump-and-run, which is always a hit, is planned for 7 p.m. Thursday in the grandstands.

“It’s really a nice, small county fair, so we try to provide things for all different age groups,” she said.

A “singspiration” event is planned before the fair at 6 p.m. Sunday. Fair entries, such as the pre-registered exhibits and animals, arrive on Monday, with the livestock judging and opening events beginning on Tuesday. The official opening and flag ceremony happens at 5 p.m. Tuesday, led by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

The carnival opens at 1 p.m. Wednesday, with rides provided by Schmidt Amusements. Wristbands for the carnival will be sold for $5 from 2-10 p.m. Wednesday is also the only day to purchase a wristband for the week for $40.

Entertainment is planned for each night, including the Little Miss, Princess, and Queen Pageant at 7 p.m. Tuesday, the horse pull in the grandstands at 7 p.m. Wednesday, and family fun and talent night in the grandstands at 7 p.m. Thursday.

Gamb said the fair is also a 4-H fair and that there are currently 94 4-H members registered.

Bonnie Hardies, the county’s 4-H program coordinator with the Michigan State University Extension, said every day the youth in the 4-H program participate in some sort of a showing event for animals, such as chickens, rabbits, pigs, sheep, cattle and horses.

Many of their projects wrap up at 6 p.m. Friday with the livestock auction.
