Bills paid for jail, airport projects

ALPENA — The bills continue to roll in for construction of Alpena County’s new jail and airport terminal.

During Wednesday’s Alpena County Board of Commissioners’ Finance Committee meeting, commissioners voted to pay several invoices related to the projects and also received updates on the progress for each.

On the jail project, the committee voted to pay BKV Group $60,676 and Granger Construction $114,293. The bills were part of the budget.

Commissioner Bill Peterson said the jail project, funded by a property tax approved by voters in November 2017, is moving along and within budget.

“The contractor trailer is set up and I think they have been hauling out sand for fill,” he said. “We have had a glitch in trying to get the final design plans from the steel company so we can get a building permit, so that may push us back a few weeks, but, other than that, all of the other needed permits are pulled.”

The committee also voted to pay a trio of bills for the airport project: Consulting firm RS&H will get $159,040 and $11,763 for two invoces and Spence Brothers will get $73,285.

Those expenses were also budgeted for.

The Federal Aviation Administration is picking up 90% of the nearly $12 million cost of the terminal project, while the Michigan Department of Transportation and the county will split the balance at 5% each.

Commissioner Bob Adrian, who isn’t on the Finance Committee but attended Wednesday’s meeting in the audience, provided the update on the jail.

“The interior walls are going up and the building is pretty much weathered in,” he said. “They are getting close to putting in the windows and soon they will begin the brick work on the facade.”

It is expected the terminal will be completed by the end of the year, while the jail should be open by fall of 2020.
