Local school board ROUNDUP

A roundup of recent activity by Northeast Michigan school boards:

∫ The Alcona Community Schools Board of Education voted to purchase 43 acres of land behind Alcona Elementary School for $60,000 with a 50% down payment.

The board also approved the 2019-20 millage levy at 19 mills for non-homestead properties and 1 mill for homestead properties for summer collection.

The board also approved hiring Rachel Wilkerson as an elementary school teacher and Tina Gerard as a cook, cashier, and custodian at Alcona Middle/High School, and accepted the resignation of Kari King as a special education teacher.

∫ The Alpena Public Schools Board of Education appointed Stephanie Shafto to the board and hired Melissa Guy as the executive director for human resources and labor relations.

The board also approved breakfast prices of $1.75 for elementary and secondary, elementary lunch price of $2.85, and secondary lunch price of $3.10 for the 2019-20 school year.

Resignations were accepted from Justin Gluesing, assistant superintendent for human resources and labor relations, Thunder Bay Junior High School teacher Matthew Byce, Besser Elementary School secretary Allison Byce, and Alpena High School F-House secretary Kelsey Mitchell.

∫ The Atlanta Community Schools Board of Education extended Superintendent Carl Seiter’s contract through the 2021-22 school year, and approved the contracts of administrative assistant Amanda Flick, Principal Tawny Hisscock, and Facility Director Randy Mullard.

The board rated Seiter as effective in the district’s formal superintendent evaluation.

The board accepted resignations from Lisa Duncan, Cora Carigon, Lisa Marlatt, and Tina Delekta.

∫ The Hillman Community Schools Board of Education approved food services prices for the 2019-20 school year at $2.75 for junior/senior high school lunch, $2.60 for elementary school lunch, $1.75 for an adult breakfast, and $4 for an adult lunch.

Hillman Elementary School teacher Jamie Lis and varsity girls basketball coach John Kuzewski both resigned from the school district.

∫ The Alpena-Montmorency-Alcona Educational Service District Board of Education approved tax levies of 0.2139 mills for general operations and 1.9743 mills for special education. Those property taxes would cost the owner of a $100,000 house about $10.69 and $98.72, respectively.

The board voted to update the district’s bank signatures to remove Tony Suszek, effective July 1, and designate Melissa Cook and Margaret Negro as authorized agents and Caryn Herrick as an authorized transfer agent.

∫ The Alpena Community College Board of Trustees approved raising tuition from $133 per contact hour to $137 per contact hour for in-district students and from $210 per contact hour to $217 per contact hour for out-of-district students for the fall semester.

The board also voted to purchase eight in-school video conferencing units and a delivery unit for placement on the Alpena campus for a cost not to exceed $88,362.
