Habermehl files for open seat

ALPENA — A longtime Alpena County commissioner who was defeated in last year’s election has filed a letter of interest for a vacant seat on the county board.

The seat representing District No. 7 became open after Commissioner Kevin Burr stepped down to accept a new job out of the area.

Cam Habermehl had represented that district for more than a dozen years on the board, many as chairman, but he was defeated by Burr in 2018. If appointed by the current batch of commissioners, Habermehl would finish out Burr’s term, which expires at the end of 2020.

The board is expected to vote on an appointment for the vacant seat at its regular meeting on June 25. At this point, no other potential candidates have stepped forward. The deadline to do so is June 21 at the end of the business day.

Commissioners have already filled one vacant seat this year, as Dave Karchnick was appointed to fill the District No. 3 seat opened after Nick Modrzynski resigned to also take a job and to dedicate more time with his family.

People interested in filling the District No. 7 seat are encouraged to contact the Alpena County Clerk’s Office with any questions.
