‘Hopefully, we get ’em all’

Meet Patrolman Adam David, Alpena Police Department

Adam David

WHY HE ENTERED LAW ENFORCEMENT

David, a patrolman with the Alpena Police Department for the past seven years, was drawn to law enforcement following the example of his mother, who is now the undersheriff in Oscoda County.

WHAT HE DOES FOR FUN

When he’s not busy being a dad, you’re likely to see David on the 9th Avenue dam or the breakwall, fishing for walleye or chatting with the regulars to see if anything is biting.

WHAT’S HIS JOB?

A self-proclaimed night owl, David has worked a lot of overnight shifts in recent years. In the middle of the night, he’s probably patrolling the streets, watching for drunk drivers, checking for unlocked doors, or responding to anything from a noise complaint to a breaking-and-entering in progress.

David recently finished an intensive training that certified him as the only drug recognition expert in the county. His skills will be valuable in determining the class of drug a subject has ingested based on a variety of factors, ranging from pupil dilation to behavior patterns.

WHAT’S HIS FAVORITE PART OF THE JOB?

Getting out and meeting people, helping people who can’t help themselves, and interacting with children are high on David’s list. He gets satisfaction from removing drunk drivers to keep the streets of the city safe.

WHAT’S THE TOUGHEST PART?

Anything involving children being hurt is by far the hardest part of the job, according to David.

“You do what you can to make sure it doesn’t happen again,” David said. “And you know, at the end of the day, that’s all you can do. Hopefully, we get ’em all.”
