Gas drive-off leads police to stolen items

A drive-off from a gas station led to the discovery of stolen property in Alcona County Saturday, police said.

Deputies from the Alcona County Sheriff’s Office were called to Barton City General Store, where a driver of a sports utility vehicle pulling a trailer and backhoe had fled without paying for his gas.

Deputies searched a subdivision in Lost Lake Woods Club, where the vehicle was last seen, eventually locating the vehicle hidden behind a residence. While speaking with the driver, who was identified as Justin Cummings, of Taylor, officers noticed that the trailer and backhoe had been freshly painted and the ignition switch had been damaged.

An investigation revealed that the trailer and backhoe had been stolen from Chet’s Rent-All in Clinton Township. Cummings was arrested and was arraigned on Monday in the 81st District Court, charged with two counts of receiving and concealing stolen property and one count of larceny.
