Dollar General opens in

Hubbard Lake

A new Dollar General store has opened at 1697 W. Hubert Road in Hubbard Lake, the company said in a news release.

An official grand opening ceremony happens beginning at 8 a.m. today with free prizes and special deals.

“Dollar General is committed to delivering a pleasant shopping experience that includes a convenient location, a wide assortment of merchandise and great prices on quality products,” Dan Nieser, Dollar General’s senior vice president of real estate and store development, said in a statement. “We hope our area customers will enjoy shopping at Dollar General’s new location.”

800 find jobs with Michigan Works!

The Michigan Works! Northeast Consortium said in a newsletter that it helped 801 job-seekers find work in April.

Other statistics for the month:

∫ 2,109 people visited the consortium’s offices

∫ The office worked with 50 new employers

∫ The consortium posted 93 jobs, and employers posted another 150 jobs on a job-openings site.

The consortium said its work netted an economic wage impact of $25.2 million.

Suszek retires from AAACU

Helen Suszek, who started her career with Alpena Alcona Area Credit Union in 1974, recently celebrated her retirement, the credit union said in a news release.

Suszek started as a teller and eventually worked her way up to director of accounting.

“We wish Helen happiness in her retirement and appreciate her dedication to the credit union movement and to AAACU throughout the years,” the credit union said in a statement.

mBank earns diversity award

mBank has been selected by the U.S. Small Business Administration Michigan District Office as the 2018 Diversity Community Lender of the Year, the bank said in a news release.

To receive the honor, the bank had to show that it worked to “advance diverse participation among small businesses from historically underrepresented groups,” including minorities, women and veterans.

“I’m incredibly proud of our entire commercial lending team for their hard work and dedication to Michigan’s small business community,” Kelly George, president and CEO of mBank, said in a statement.

Five headed to nonprofit

The Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan has chosen five area nonprofit leaders for an eight-month Leadership Learning Lab, the foundation said in a news release.

Chosen were Bradley Somers, of the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena, Jeffrey Mindock, of the Thunder Bay Theatre, Denise Bearre, of the Alcona County Library, Arleen Wood, of the Iosco-Arenac District Library, and Kimberly Scott, of River House Inc.

Also included in the cohort are Annette Wells, Community Mediation Services, Taylar Akin, of the Gaylord Area Chamber of Commerce, Christine Dunaj, of the MidMichigan Community Health Services, and Katie Dunaj, of the Association to Rescue Kritters.

“The Leadership Learning Lab seeks to connect and empower nonprofit leaders and give them the skills to strengthen the organizations and communities they serve,” the community foundation said in a news erlease. The community foundation partners with the Frey Foundation, Rotary Charities of Traverse City, and 11 Michigan community foundations for the effort.

apprenticeship

Scott LeCureux of the Presque Isle Electric & Gas Co-op was among 23 apprentice lineworkers from 12 Michigan utilities to graduate from the recent Joint Michigan Apprentice Program.

The new journeymen electrical line workers were feted May 3 at the Wolverine Power Cooperative Training Center, according to a news release from PIE&G.

LeCureux will continue working at PIE&G, the release said.

The apprentice program is a collaborative of the Wolverine Power Cooperative, the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 876, and Northwest Lineman College.

Maternity

Center honored

The Maternity Center at MidMichigan Medical Center-Alpena recently received Bronze Designation by the Michigan Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health, the hospital said in a news release.

The alliance “awarded hospitals for participation in the Alliance for Innovation on Maternal Health’s safety bundle initiative. In Michigan, 62 percent of all birthing hospitals are participating in … the pregnancy safety bundles,” the hospital said in a news release.
