Road commission OKs assessment process

ALPENA — The Alpena County Road Commission approved resolutions for Pohl Road and Elden Drive so the road commission can move forward with the special assessment process for the roads during Tuesday’s meeting.

Managing Director Larry Orcutt said the resolutions that were passed validate the petitions for Pohl Road and Elden Drive that were turned in. The petitions had to be signed by over 51 percent of residents in order for them to move forward.

“The resolutions verified that there was enough signatures representing the roads to start the assessment process,” Orcutt said. “And the resolutions direct and initiate survey and design for the projects to develop an estimated cost for the work proposed.”

Orcutt said when the road commission knows about the estimated cost after the special assessment process, the residents of the roads will be informed.

“There are different resolutions that come into play and public hearings that we’ll have later on in the process to provide residents an opportunity to comment,” Orcutt said.

Orcutt said special assessment law states the residents could be responsible for the engineering costs, which still have to be determined.

“We have to get the process going and we have a lot of local roads that need to be resurfaced that have deteriorating for 40 years and more,” Orcutt said.

Since the road commission approved in June postponing pulverizing the Burks Manor Subdivision, Meyers Road, Elder Drive, and Pohl Road, an agreement was made with Alpena Township to allocate those funds to Genschaw Road from Long Rapids Road to Golf Course Road for an overlay of asphalt. The Alpena Township Board of Trustees approved last week to provide its share of funds. Each party is going to put forward $25,000 for that project.
