Hillman schools set 2018-19 school calendar

HILLMAN — The Hillman Community Schools Board of Education approved the 2018-19 school district calendar during its meeting on Monday.

The 2018-19 school year is going to start on Aug. 27, with the last day of school happening June 6.

“It coincides with our waiver to start earlier than Labor Day,” Superintendent Carl Seiter said. “All we’re doing is shifting a week. We worked together with the Education Association and the Hillman teachers.”

Seiter said there are going to be four half days throughout the school year. Two half days are going to be for the end of the semesters and the other two are going to be for parent-teacher conferences.

Seiter said he received negative parent feedback about the early release Fridays, which the school district is no longer implementing.

Students are also going to have Nov. 15-16 off for the start of hunting season and Nov. 22-23 off for Thanksgiving break. Winter break starts on Dec. 22 and runs through Jan. 3, 2019 and spring break is going to be March 25-29, 2019.

The plan right now for the elementary school is to have one kindergarten class, two first grade classes, one second grade class, one third grade class, and three teachers who will teach the core academics for fourth and fifth grade.

“I like this calendar and it accomplishes what we want to accomplish,” Seiter said. “This is done, approved, and it will be out on the website. I’ll Facebook the major dates.”

The board accepted resignations from High School Spanish teacher Erin Brege and Bus Supervisor Michael Needham.
