Talent Search to hold summer camp next week

ALPENA — The TRiO Talent Search Program will host the Summer Career Camp Monday through Friday next week.

The program is for qualified high school students from 17 local high schools to promote college for specific students, most of whom would be the first in their family to attend college.

Program Director Robert Newton said each year there is a different theme for the camp. This year is focused on careers in the medical field.

“We’ll have 22 speakers to teach them about different medical careers and what it takes to become one. We’ll the mock disaster scenario Monday, Wednesday we’ll have the Red Cross here to teach CPR, infant CPR and first aid on. Friday they’ll have a tour of hospital,” he said.

The program focuses on the STEM themes for the jobs in those areas because of their high success rates.

In previous years students learned about ROVs and drones, and last year was focused on jobs with water and streams.

“They’re going to learn about the different careers. They know they want to go into medical field but they don’t know exactly what job yet. We’ll show them various careers and what it takes to become one of those people,” he said.

On Monday they will set up an accident re-creation and alcohol/drug party raid. Local police, firefighters, EMTs and nursing will be in attendance. The police and firefighters will demonstrate the Jaws of Life and the nursing students will show how to treat and dress wounds.

During the party setup the police also will hand out fake Minor in Possession infractions to stress to the students how important their choices are to their future.

After all of the activities Newton said he hopes the students have a few takeaways.

“We want to take their interest and help them become better students. It makes the classroom applicable,” he said.
