Hillman to partner with APS

HILLMAN — Hillman Community Schools is starting a partnership next school year with Alpena Public Schools and its career and technical education program so students can have more opportunities to take a variety of classes.

Superintendent Carl Seiter told the board of education during Monday’s meeting about the partnership between the school districts. He said he’s grateful the partnership between the school districts was formed.

Atlanta Community Schools and Alcona Community Schools also are partnering with APS so students can take the CTE classes. Alpena will be offering 11 CTE programs to the students.

“I really want to thank Dr. John VanWagoner for working so closely with us to provide opportunity for kids in this area,” Seiter said. “I’m very excited for our kids.”

A bus from Atlanta is going to stop in Hillman to pick up the students to take to Alpena High School. Seiter said Atlanta and Hillman are going to share the cost of the bus. He said the cost is $500 per student for each semester.

“We’ve got kids signing up,” Seiter said. “I think we got 17 to 18 kids in Atlanta that are interested and I think we’re up to 10 or 12 here in Hillman. We sent a bus of kids over there to view the programs. They came back very excited and I think word is going to spread.”

Seiter said he looks for the numbers to grow in the future once word starts to spread.
