Art Walks start Friday, May 31

For the third year Alpena Art Walks will be taking place in downtown Alpena on Final Fridays from May through September.

These community events are hosted by the five downtown art galleries — Forty Five North Art Gallery, Art in the Loft, My Glass Wings, Studio Rubedo and Thunder Bay Arts Council Gallery. The Art Walks are art-centric events, highlighting Alpena as an arts and cultural destination.

The first Art Walk is scheduled for May 31 and the galleries will extend their hours to 8 p.m. that day. Each gallery will have special activities planned for the monthly Final Friday Art Walk. These include an opportunity to meet the artists, artists’ demonstrations, drawings for prizes, light refreshments, other downtown promotions and specials and live outdoor music by street performers.

Special events scheduled for May 31, between 5:30 and 8 p.m., include:

∫ Forty Five North Art Gallery – Meet the Artist – Photographer Ted Fines

∫ Art in the Loft – Special Artist Demonstration

∫ My Glass Wings – Meet the Artist – Tina Montgomery

∫ Studio Rubedo – Meet the Artist – Brian Schorn

∫ Thunder Bay Arts Council Gallery – Wendy Werth, Gourd Painting Demonstration

Many other downtown businesses will also extend their hours to 8 p.m. The list of those businesses can be found on the Downtown Development Authority website at

Future Art Walks are scheduled for June 28, July 26, Aug. 30, Sept. 27, and a pre-Christmas Art Walk on Nov. 29.

Galleries will be open for extended hours until 8 p.m. on these dates, and many special demonstrations and activities are planned for them.
