Log Cabin Day Saturday at museum

ALPENA — Saturday is the Annual Log Cabin Day at Besser Museum for Northeast Michigan, 491 Johnson St., Alpena.

From noon to 4 p.m., step back in time and experience life in early Northeast Michigan. General admission is $5 per adult, $3 per senior, $3 per child, and free admission for Besser Museum members. Planetarium shows are $1 per person.

The buildings in the Historical Village will be open for tours including sing-a-longs in the Spratt Church. There will be guided tours aboard the 1928 Katherine V commercial fishing tug and the retired DNR Chinook Research Vessel. Hammond Bay Biological Station will have an educational booth with live sea lampreys.

Visitors can enjoy watching demonstrations of weaving, spinning and jewelry making. There will also be birch bark basket making demonstrations by Keith Knetch from Native Ways Traditional Arts, LLC. The fossil park will be open where you can hunt and keep all the Devonian fossils you find. There will also be a face painting for station for kids.

The Northeast Michigan Artists Guild will be holding their “Really Big” art sale. Meet and greet the artists while enjoying the guild’s exhibit, “Around the Clock.” There will be popcorn, Pepsi products, and our strawberry sundaes made with fresh, local strawberries, on sale while supplies last.
