Alpena Salvation Army reaches Red Kettle goal

ALPENA — The Salvation Army of Alpena made a call for help to give in 2021, and the community answered in a big way, helping the nonprofit to reach its Red Kettle goal.

In a year of continued need and a struggling economy, the Salvation Army was not sure if our community would be able to step up to the increased goal. Instead, they were able to meet their goal and provide help to so many in need, because of partners, donors, and tireless workers who stepped up amid the struggles in 2021.

“This year we received many surprises of donations from the community, including a rise in assistance from our youth,” said Major Prezza Morrison. “We also had an increase in bell-ringing volunteers, including a full day of almost every site with volunteers.”

She explained the numbers behind the goal, and those reached by Salvation Army services and programs.

“Our $158,000 goal was reached, and we were able to serve 361 children with gifts, 641 people with a Christmas meal and 286 nursing facility seniors with Christmas gifts,” Morrison said. “These funds will also assist us in helping the needs of our Alpena County neighbors in 2022.”

The Salvation Army would not be able to serve those in need in this county without the help of its generous partners, donors, and bell-ringers. The Army appreciates community members for giving from their heart during this difficult time.

“You are giving hope to those who need to feel hope this coming year,” Morrison added. “The Salvation Army is not the Salvation Army without you.”

As 2022 begins, The Salvation Army is open from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The nonprofit assists with utility bills, food and personal care items, youth and adult programs, spiritual assistance and more. Volunteers are needed to help with SA programs. Please call 989-358-2769 for questions or more information.

Monetary donations are still accepted via mail or in person at The Salvation Army Corps Community Center at 722 N. Second Ave., Alpena, MI 49707, online at www.salmich.org/alpena or via phone by calling Morrison at 989-358-2769, ext. 12.
