Salvation Army Stuff the Bus Aug. 6-8

ALPENA — Each year The Salvation Army provides backpacks full of school supplies for youth in Alpena County. Due to the economy right now, the Salvation Army understands the concern for families to purchase needed items for school. Housing, utility, and food is a necessity, but starting the first day of school with needed supplies is essential, too. No one should need to choose between one or the other. The Salvation Army will make sure of that.

The Salvation Army Stuff the Bus event is Friday, Aug. 6 through Sunday, Aug. 8 at Walmart, 1180 M-32 W, Alpena. A large box will be placed in the entrance area of the store for items to be dropped off throughout the weekend. Items needed include: 3-inch three-ring binders, college-ruled spiral notebooks, glue bottles, composition books, college- and wide-ruled filler paper, markers, index cards, scissors, highlighters.

This year, the Salvation Army is working in partnership with United Way of Northeast Michigan Stuff the Bus. They are holding their event Aug. 6-8 as well. Their school supply collection will be held at Walgreens, 1011 M-32 W, Alpena. A bus will be onsite with volunteers collecting donations. Working together assures that no child in Alpena County will be going to school without the needed supplies.

The Salvation Army has provided backpacks for students for over 10 years. During that time, the group has distributed over 2,000 back packs to families. Last year, 82 backpacks with a total of 1,410 items were distributed for school. This year, the group is expecting an increase due to increased needs and financial concerns.

The Salvation Army 2021 distribution day is from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 26 for students in grades 1 through 12. Each family must bring I.D. for each child and proof of grade attending. Please contact The Salvation Army with any questions.

Monetary donations are accepted via mail or in-person at The Salvation Army Corps Community Center at 772 N. 2nd Ave., Alpena, MI 49707, or online at www.salmich.org.
