If the music moves you, give it a try

Here it is May already.

We have talked about:

The Alphabet — Jan. 22, 2021

Words and Reading — Feb. 26, 2021

Numbers — March 29, 2021

Timelines — April 23, 2021

In May, I’d like to talk to youngsters and grownups — in fact, everyone who has the use of reason and interest in playing an instrument.

Music gives joy and pleasure to those who make it happen, and those who like to sing along, dance, work to the beat, and to those who just like to listen.

My late husband, Clarence John Roznowski, was Polish. Years ago, we got some fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders together. After school, Saturdays and Sundays, we taught the children to sing in The Children’s Choir. Many of the boys and girls learned some of the Polish language by singing Polish songs at St. Mary Church. Music lends itself well to learning a language by singing in that language.

There is a lot to music. If you have a notion, time, and desire to play an instrument, I would suggest you buy an inexpensive “Teach Yourself Music Theory” book, level one. Years ago, I got one from a music store in Petoskey, but I’m quite sure Joel’s Guitar Shop on State Avenue in Alpena would have them also. Of course, it would be great to have a music teacher. However, an easy “Teach Yourself Music Theory” book would nicely serve the purpose to start with. It will teach you about keys on a piano, rhythm, notes, chords, staffs, treble and bass clefs, bar lines, rests, sharps, flats, and so much more. It is not hardcover and it is only about as big as a magazine. It is not expensive. It has pictures of notes, piano keys, staffs, etc., and explanations of how it all goes together and makes perfect sense.

Understanding music is like knowing a new language. Little by little, one step at a time is how anything is accomplished and how we get anyplace. Some people are very talented and catch on to playing an instrument sooner than others. Everyone must just keep at it, even if it takes a while. Don’t beat yourself up! Don’t quit! As long as you stay determined, you will get it. Payback is worth it.

As for the choice of instrument you decide to work on or play, I would suggest the piano to start with. (A keyboard is much like a piano and not as expensive.) However, I know people who started on other instruments and did well. My brother, Mark Bleau, taught himself how to play the guitar, without a teacher and without a book. He said it was not easy and took about two years, but he stuck with it. Beautiful music was enjoyed by many from Mark and his guitar. He had to leave us and we miss him so. I am sure he is now playing his guitar in heaven.

If you are a parent who wishes to work with your child about music, use all the ideas you got from previous articles:

¯ Rules and rewards

¯ Attention span

¯ Competency

¯ Kindness and respect

¯ Appreciation

If you are interested in making music happen, remember Practice Makes Perfect!

After all is said and done, you may decide to play the radio, TV or YouTube. That’s OK, too.
