Association of Lifelong Learners programs set

The Association of Lifelong Learners has set programs for next week.

Monday

Early Antarctic Exploration and Discovery, 1897-1916, will be held via Zoom only at 2 p.m. on Monday, led by Olin Joynton.

Joynton said, “Rocky Roland’s recent travelogue on Antarctica piqued his interest in how humans first came to know the southern continent. De Gerlache, Scott, Shackleton, and especially Amundsen – how dauntless they were, how determined and resourceful! What can we learn from them to meet the challenges of today?”

Joynton taught philosophy at community colleges in Texas and Wyoming before coming to Alpena in 2004 to be president of Alpena Community College. In retirement since 2015, he and his wife Patricia move around to be near family, most recently landing in Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Tuesday

“The Soul of America” will be held via Zoom only at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

This will be a book review of Jon Meacham’s “The Soul of America: The Battle for Our Better Angles.” This session will provide a brief synopsis of the book, some interviews with the author and discussion.

Tim Kuehnlein is an instructor of political science and history, and was the Endowed Chair for 2009 at ACC. As a member of Michigan Arts and Culture Northeast, he was very involved with the planning of the Lake Huron Discovery Tour and also served as its president.

Thursday

At 1 p.m. on Thursday, via Zoom and in person, learn How a Woman from Hillman Became the Chair of the Michigan Natural Resources Committee.

How did a little girl from rural Ann Arbor, who graduated from Michigan State University with a degree in sociology, went on to a management position with a large savings and loan, got married and left Ann Arbor for Northeast Michigan end up a chair of the Michigan Natural Resources Committee? Hear the story about the conservation journey of Carol Moncrieff Rose, the many individuals who influenced, guided and mentored her along this path, and her experiences along the way.

Rose has been a part of the conservation community for all of her adult life. Influenced by her early childhood days in a rural area of Ann Arbor, she began fishing as a child, but came to hunting later in life when she and her husband moved to Hillman. Since her arrival in Northeast Michigan, Rose has served in leadership roles for several organizations, including the Montmorency County Conservation Club, Upper Black River Council, Michigan United Conservation Clubs and the Michigan Wildlife Council. In 2020, Rose was appointed to the Michigan Natural Resources Commission and now serves as its chair.
