Calcite Credit Union had the opportunity to team up with the Michigan Credit Union Foundation (MCUF) to donate $10,000 back to the local community.

MCUF offered a Community Crisis Support Grant in which they would match Calcite Credit Union’s $5,000 donation to serve the purpose of providing funds to local restaurants and meals to local families, while also giving back to essential employees working tirelessly throughout the pandemic.

Gift certificates were purchased from restaurants in Presque Isle, Cheboygan, and northern Emmet county and given out randomly to community members that utilized Calcite Credit Union’s drive-thru services in all branch locations.

“Thank you for your kindness and generosity in purchasing gift certificates from us in this very difficult time. It is certainly appreciated,” said Bryan Fuhrman, owner of Retros Diner in Rogers City.

Calcite Credit Union also had giveaways via their Facebook page highlighting community involvement and appreciation. One post posed the question, “What do you do for your community?”

“I work in the Alpena Public Schools system. I also shop local and support local fundraisers and charity events,” commented community member Rebecca F. Baldwin Hay.

Calcite Credit Union also delivered treats to various frontline workers including the Rogers City Sheriff’s Dept, Cheboygan and Presque Isle County EMS and USPS, Rogers City Medilodge, Awakon Federal Credit Union, and Straits Area Federal Credit Union.

“Throughout the pandemic we have been committed to assisting our members and community in various ways, but this outreach initiative has a special feeling,” said Matt Mertz, Calcite Credit Union’s new Chief Financial Officer. “Our local restaurants and essential workers provide a value that can often be forgotten. Being able to support our community during difficult times is gratifying to everyone here at the credit union. We wish these funds could have been granted to each of our local businesses, but we are hopeful that this will spark a ‘buy local’ mindset in our community.”

Calcite Credit Union wants to remind everyone of the importance of shopping locally and encourages residents to get out and support small businesses whenever possible. Calcite Credit Union appreciates everyone who participated in this project to make it a success.
