ALL programs happening this week

The Association of Lifelong Learners will host some online programs this week, open to the public via Zoom. Send an email at all@alpenacc.edu for program connection information.

Join ALL at 10 a.m. on Tuesday for “What’s The Matter with Those Snowflakes?”

Why are iGen students considered so fragile? The term iGen refers to young people born after 1995, according to a 2017 book by Jean Twenge. It is short for “internet generation.” According to Jonathan Haidt and Greg Lukianoff, they have been coddled rather than exposed growing up to ordinary bumps and bruises, insults and injuries that made earlier generations strong. They go around sensitized to micro-aggressions. Their professors issue trigger warnings before touching on anything potentially offensive. Provocative speakers are not invited in first place, disinvited if they get that far, or shouted down by hecklers. Our authors offer analysis on how we got here and advice on getting to a better place.

Olin Joynton taught philosophy at community colleges in Texas and Wyoming before coming to Alpena in 2004 as president of Alpena Community College. In retirement since 2015 he teaches online for West Shore Community College and with his wife Patricia moves around to be near family, most recently to Bowling Green, Kentucky.

Then at 10 a.m. Thursday is “Enhancing Your Sense of Humor.”

Everyone has a sense of humor. It is either very acute or needs some improvement. The purpose of this presentation is to both make you laugh and learn some tips to see the comedy in our lives, while at the same time avoid anger, depression and anxiety. The presentation will be a tribute to Far Side cartoonist Gary Larson and feature some of his work.
