Upcoming ALL programs both online and in-person

The Association of Lifelong Learners has resumed some of its in-person programming, and is still offering many online courses, open to the public.

Pickleball has resumed from 9 to 11 a.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday at the APlex. ALL organizers are still waiting for Alpena Community College to authorize use of the M. Briggs Center, where most of their classes are normally held.

ALL is calling its in-person programming “reality programs.” These programs are open to ALL members. The Annual Meeting and Happening at 12:30 p.m. at Lost Lake Woods Club. Call the office at 989-358-7207 for details.

July 1 Hike

Another upcoming reality program will be July 1 — the Thompson Harbor Hike, starting at 9 a.m. Mark Kinney will be leading a hike which was originally scheduled in mid-May. A minimum of eight people is required. Registering in advance is encouraged.

We will be walking the trails at Thompson Harbor, located on US-23, two miles north of 638 Hwy. in Presque Isle County. It is an easy, mostly level walk on what used to be gravel roads, and are now trails that take you through a recreation area noted for migratory and resident birds and wildflowers, and as well as the site of the wreck of the American Union. This hike will feature opportunities to find birds and flowers, and have a great time together. Bring your camera and binoculars. Kinney will plan to use the ALL microphone and remote ear listening devices so participants can hear what is being found.

Today

At 11 a.m., join presenter Joe Gentry for “National Debt 101.”

National Debt is the elephant in the room that no one wants to talk about nor do they want to do anything about. Learn what you need to understand about national budget deficits and our increasing burdensome National Debt. This will be a good primer to objectively reach out to your elected representatives for solutions. Gentry is a former adjunct economics instructor for ACC, a retiree from First Federal, currently serves as a trustee for Alpena Community College and is now the executive director for United Way of Northeast Michigan.

Then at 1:30 p.m., join the Rev. Bob Case for “A Scene at the Bar.”

St. Augustine, Thomas Aquinas, Darwin, and McGrath walk into the bar and… This presentation will be a time for discussion about the importance of evolution as a positive force in Christianity. Case is a pastor emeritus from the First Congregational United Church of Christ and is beginning to enjoy his full retirement. He continues to offer thoughtful presentations giving ALL members much to consider and ponder.

Wednesday

At 11 a.m., hear from Max and Carol Lund about “Cambodia Corps Inc. Update.”

The Lunds will share their most recent experiences as they traveled to Cambodia for their annual visit. As a Vietnam Veteran, Max and others were determined to give back to the Montagnard tribesmen who were loyal to the U.S. during the war. To this end, the Cambodia Corps Inc. was formed. Max will explain the work of this group and will use Carol’s photos to show today’s Montagnards and the organization’s student recruiting efforts in the highlands of north east Cambodia. Max Lund will be the presenter. He is a lifelong resident of Alpena, coming from four generations of Lunds. He studied at Northern Michigan University and is the president of Cambodia Corps Inc . Carol Lund is a retired elementary school teacher and is an active volunteer in the Alpena community.

Thursday

At 7 p.m., join ALL and the Presque Isle Township Museum Society for a joint program, “Lighthouse Drone Photography Webinar.”

This program will be a favorite of lighthouse fans, drone photography enthusiasts, and those curious about the unique variables to consider when selecting drone equipment.

Eugene Cambre will present his experiences with selecting and using a drone. Plus he will show his photographs and videos of the Presque Isle lighthouse and the surrounding areas. Cambre will discuss his experiences in using drones to capture photos and videos of these spectacular historical beacons that are built to survive the most treacherous storms.

This program will be simulcast on the ALL Zoom platform plus on the Presque Isle Township Museum Society and the Association of Lifelong Learners @ Alpena Community College Facebook pages via Facebook Live. You do not have to have a Facebook account to access these pages.

Friday

At 9:55 a.m., join Jane Mayle for ” Yoga-Online!”

ALL Zoomers have been invited to participate in an ongoing online Yoga class with Mayle.The class is geared toward all levels — everyone just does what their body is allowing them to do. There is no specialized instruction given during the Zoom sessions. Each participant is responsible for ensuring their own well-being during the program.Please sign-in by 9:55 a.m.

Mayle attended Yoga instructor training in 2012, which led her eventually to teach basic Yoga at the Lost Woods Club Lodge and chair Yoga at the Alcona Senior Center in Lincoln. Both of these programs will resume when the lockdown is lifted in Alcona County.

Monday

At 2 p.m. each Monday is “Line Dancing” with Debbie Kerr.

She has been teaching line dancing classes for sixyears — four years for the ALL group. With the current stay-at-home orders, she has switched to teaching virtual classes. If you have been dancing for years or would like to give line dancing a try, this is the class for you. Wear some comfortable shoes and have a water bottle nearby and tune in for this class. This will be a weekly program until we can meet in-person.
