On Friday, May 29, the men and women of the Kiwanis Club of Alpena presented three $700 COVID-19 relief checks to three worthy agencies in Alpena. For Kiwanis International, “it’s all about the kids” and these three organizations epitomize that goal.

Since 1926 the Boys and Girls Club of Alpena has been pursuing its mission to enable and inspire young people — especially those most in need — to realize their full potential.

Similarly, the Alpena Baby Pantry directly supports the Kiwanis Young Children Priority One Project (for kids 0-5 years old) by assisting parents in raising healthy children during times of need through early intervention, education, and material support.

Lastly, The Foster Closet of Northern Michigan addresses a critical and often under-recognized need to support the foster care system in the Alpena area. By providing these children with gently used or new and up-to-date clothing and supplies, The Foster Closet can help raise their self-esteem so they can feel good about themselves regardless of their living situation.

Like many agencies and businesses in the COVID-19 lockdown, these three have seen their financial support wither and their needs increase. It was the pleasure of the Kiwanis Club of Alpena to try to help the Boys and Girls Club, the Baby Pantry, and the Foster Closet continue to support the young children and youth of Alpena in these trying times.
