LWV presents voter, Census programs

Changes in voting procedures, approved by voters last November, will be reviewed with citizens in two different programs presented by the League of Women Voters of Northeast Michigan.

A third program will focus on the 2020 Census. All three programs carry out the League’s goal of encouraging informed and active participation in government.

The first town hall style forum, “Making Democracy Work,” will be held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 29, at Alpena Community College. The forum will be held in Room 106, across the hall from the Granum Theater in the ACC Center Building. Information will be presented on Michigan’s new voting rights, the Citizens Redistricting Commission (ending gerrymandering), and the 2020 Census.

The second meeting will be an open house educational forum on Friday, Feb. 14, celebrating the National League’s 100th birthday with a national call to action. The “Women Power the Vote Day of Action” will be from 1 to 3 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 14 at the Alpea County Library in the upstairs Judi Stillion Conference Room.

The third event will focus on the census and will be in partnership with the Association of Lifelong Learners. It will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 19 at the Alpena County Library. Presenter will be Patrick Heraghty, executive director of the Community Foundation for Northeast Michigan.

The League of Women Voters encourages the public to attend these meetings in preparation for the March 10 Michigan Presidential Primary.
