Blue Christmas Wednesday

First Presbyterian Church of Alpena will host a Blue Christmas Service at 7 p.m. Wednesday at 1600 W. Chisholm St. The service is designed for people who are having a difficult time during the holiday season. It will include a message of hope, understanding and love, an anointing with oil, and prayers for healing.

Free December ice skating at NLA

Northern Lights Arena is offering free ice skating on certain days and times in December, with admission and skate rental sponsored by the Alpena County Youth and Recreation Millage.

Free skating is offered from 4 to 5:45 p.m. tonight, 4 to 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, noon to 3:45 p.m. Saturday, 3:30 to 6:15 p.m. Sunday, then on the following two Mondays, from noon to 2:45 p.m. and 6 to 8:45 p.m. Monday, Dec. 23, and from noon to 2:15 p.m. Monday, Dec. 30.

ALL microplastics, ancient

shoreline mapping talks this week

On Tuesday, Association of Lifelong Learners will find out What Are Microplastics, and How Do They Affect Our World? From 4 to 5 p.m. in the Education Room at Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center, the Alpena 4-H Tech Changemakers will talk about the connections that the Alpena community has to Lake Huron through plastic, in the damaging cycle that begins with single-use plastic debris and ends in our bodies and the bodies of many wildlife species. Learn ways to make changes on individual, community and government levels to protect Lake Huron and ourselves from the dangers of plastic.

Then on Thursday, join ALL at Alpena Community College’s M. Briggs Center from 10 to 11:30 a.m. to hear from ACC instructor Jim Berles. He will talk about his recent research and experiences in Greece related to mapping ancient shorelines of Minoan Civilizations.

VFW Kids Christmas Sunday

Join VFW Post #2496 from noon to 3 p.m. on Sunday for a Kids Christmas party in the lounge at 2900 Connon St. in Alpena. Children are invited to join the VFW in experiencing the wonder of Christmas will holiday crafts, music, and a small gift. Lunch will be provided.

Free Grinch films showing Saturday

Presque Isle District Library and Rogers City Downtown Development Authority present a free family Christmas program Saturday at Rogers City Theater. Doors open at 9 a.m. with refreshments and giveaways, then at 9:30 a.m. will be the 1970s animated version of “How The Grinch Stole Christmas,” followed at 10 a.m. by the live action film starring Jim Carrey.
