Association of Lifelong Learners and the Alpena Longbeards have recently awarded scholarships to three Alpena Community College students.

ACC student Veronica Brown was awarded a $250 scholarship as the recipient of the 2019-20 ALL scholarship.

Brown is enrolled in ACC’s nursing program with a goal to become a licensed practical nurse and achieve her dream of caring for others through the nursing profession.

The Association of Lifelong Learners at Alpena Community College was founded in 1998 and is a nonprofit organization which sponsors, promotes and encourages lifelong education and enrichment experiences for people of all ages in northeast Michigan.

The group offers educational programs, activities and events both on and off campus of ACC, covering a range of topics which provide intellectual stimulation. The group established a scholarship fund with the ACC Foundation in 2012. Their scholarship provides a $250 award to a full- or part-time non-traditional student who is pursuing a degree or certificate at ACC.

Alpena Longbeards recently awarded two $500 scholarships to ACC students Ashleigh Morgan and Cody Heiser for the 2019-20 academic year.

The Longbeards club established the scholarship fund with the ACC Foundation in 2010 and annually provides scholarships to students pursuing an education in the field of natural resources.

Their group actively promotes wildlife conservation and education for area youth. Club activities are varied and include a catch-and-release fishing day at Paxton Quarry, a youth shooting day at the Alpena Sportsmen’s Club, and a day for youth to build bird houses and feeders. Members of the Alpena Longbeards also purchase and distribute corn for wild turkeys to aid with their winter survival.

An annual membership banquet is held to raise funds to support the many programs they sponsor. For more information about the Longbeards, contact Edith Utecht at 989-354-4964.
