Hillman VFW meeting tonight

The Hillman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 2356 will meet at 6 p.m. tonight for its regular monthly meeting.

The VFW had 13 members present at its Sept. 5 meeting, where the group discussed the success of the V-J Day celebration held on Aug. 10.

Friday night fish fry continues from 4 to 7 p.m. each Friday, and volunteers that can stand for three hours straight are encouraged to help. Community service time is appreciated. The fish fry features cod, walleye and shrimp weekly, with to-go meals available.

The group also needs help to police both sides of the highway each year. Polyester 3×5 American flags are offered for $25. New members are encouraged, and must be qualified veterans. Medical supplies are available to rent by calling Marv at 989-733-0838 or Wayne at 989-255-4412. Call Bob Hunt for hall rentals at 989-657-1162.

MARSP meets Thursday, Oct. 10

Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP) will hold their October meeting at noon on Thursday, Oct. 10, at First United Methodist Church.

Legislative updates will be presented. It is very important that retired school personnel become involved with what is happening with their pensions, health insurance and other topics of interest.

Hillman roller skating Fridays

Hillman roller skating starts Friday, from 7 to 10 p.m., at the Hillman Community Center, for $5 per person or $15 for a family of four or more.

Roller skating will be offered every Friday night now through March 27, 2020. There will be games, music, and concessions. Call Pam with questions at 989-742-4522.

VFW Auxiliary meets Oct. 8

The regular meeting of the VFW 2496 Auxiliary was presided over by Sr. Vice Linda Millard at 6 p.m. on Sept. 10, with 14 members in attendance. After opening ceremonies were performed the minutes were read and accepted with one correction. There were no new applications for membership. The treasurer’s report and the August bingo report were given and accepted pending audit. Donations were collected for Winonas’ National Home chairmanship. Barb LaMay did a short mentoring session on standing at attention, parade rest and proper flag salute.

Steve Romel presented a report on the poker tournament held during Brown Trout and donated the profit and a vote was taken to give the post $1,000 for their help. Barb moved to donate $25 to Battle Creek and $25 to John Dingle hospitals as part of her chairmanship. She also asked to donate $20 to the Veteran Boys writing project. Carol Belanger talked about the VOD and PP and reported info had been given to All Saints and other elementary schools but still needed to be taken to the middle and high schools. Deadline for entries and judging is Nov. 21.

Barb Stevens reminded everyone that it is time to send out dues notices to all annual members. A new 3-year trustee was appointed. The auxiliary will be having another steak fry from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 18 for $15 per person. Ayla requested donations of finger foods for the first monthly birthday night later this month.

Following the closing prayer the meeting was adjourned at 7 p.m. The next regular meeting will be at 6 p.m. Oct. 8.

Zentangle Animals class Sat.

Art in the Loft hosts Zentangle Animals with expressive artist Judy Lyon from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday, for ages 16 and up, for $50 per student. Students will choose a favorite animal or Totem Animal, add detail with patterns, symbols and designs in marker, then watercolor over it to create a soft or bold colored background.
