SUNRISE SIDE BULLETIN BOARD

54 attend MARSP meeting

Michigan Association of Retired School Personnel (MARSP) met on Thursday, Oct. 10, for their monthly meeting, with 54 attending a delicious meal and an update on legislation.

Co-President Linda Wallace called the meeting to order with the pledge and a prayer before the meal.

Committee reports including updates on insurance and membership. MARSP statewide has 35,000 members and Alpena has 237. There are about 214,000 retirees.

Door prizes were awarded to Sharon Rickard (free meal) and other door prizes were won by Carolyn Kelley, Elaine Thompson, Ray Reynolds and Daryl Peterson. Tony Suszek, Kathy and Ray Moore were first-time attendees, with Reynolds as guest of Suszek.

Jan Moordian, legislative representative to Lansing, gave an update on what is happening in Lansing with retirees’ pensions and insurance.

She said it is important for all retirees to be involved, as numbers count when it comes to negotiating for benefits. Are you aware that the legislatures determine your benefits? MARSP has a representative on the MSPERS board and we need to keep that person on the board. MARSP was very instrumental in helping hold down the cost of our insurance. If it were not for MARSP we could be paying $500/month in insurance.

The next MARSP meeting will be held at noon on Nov. 14, at the First United Methodist Church. Please bring a non-perishable food item to the meeting which will then be given to the Salvation Army.
