ALPENA — Star Wars legend Colin Cantwell will be signing autographs and showing a short video presentation of his career at a meet and greet from 5 to 7 p.m. today. The event will be held at the B Royal Movie Theater inside Bob’s Bullpen comic store at 125 N. 2nd Ave.

Cantwell used his imagination to design the Death Star, X-Wing, TIE Fighter, Star Destroyer, original Millennium Falcon, and Y-Wing, among many other Star Wars works. He also created the first oversized hi-def theater screen which is now referred to as IMAX. Among many other notable achievements, Cantwell worked with Stanely Kubrick to design space scenes and pick music for “2001, A Space Odyssey.” He was also the “Hal 9000 Computer” that conveyed the flight progress of the Apollo 11 Moon Landing to Walter Cronkite as he was broadcasting on live TV.

“CBS would become the only news station to accurately state the exact time the lander touched down, as Colin’s in-head calculations of the live NASA data told him the lander would overshoot its expected position and would need an additional minute of flight time to reach the next safe location,” a press release explained.

“He’s in his 80s now so this is a fleeting opportunity for artists, science fiction fans, movie-goers, model building enthusiasts and simply people that just want to show their kids how math and science play all kinds of rolls in society,” emailed Bob LeFevre, owner of Bob’s Bullpen, B Royal Movie Theater and The Bulldog restaurant.

The presentation is $5 per person. Signatures are $25, and selfies are $10.

For more information, visit Bob’s Bullpen event page on Facebook. Tickets can be purchased online.

Attendees are encouraged to wear Star Wars costumes to be entered into drawings.
