On Thursday, July 18, five members of Hubbard Lake Sportsman and Improvement Association (HLSIA) met with Brad Jensen, executive director of Huron Pines at the Hubbard Lake Preserve, 720 Holiday Inn Road, Hubbard Lake, to present him with a check for $5,000 to be used to improve the infrastructure of the preserve.

The 80-acre nature preserve was donated to Huron Pines in summer 2018 by John and Wendy Frye, who had owned the property but moved elsewhere. Huron Pines is a nonprofit organization dedicated to protecting, restoring and conserving natural resources in the state. HLSIA is a nonprofit organization whose primary purpose is to secure improvement in the conditions in and around Hubbard Lake.

Huron Pines is currently having a fundraising drive to help improve the preserve’s facilities. So far, Huron Pines has received more than $40,000 to support the initial programming, create public parking, clear the trails, and install signs.

“The donation from HLSIA is most generous and will be a big help as we pursue improvements for the preserve,” Jensen said.

HLSIA President Douglas Cameron said, “We felt that the Fryes’ donation of the land to Huron Pines and Huron Pines’ decision to use it as a site for learning about the outdoors and enjoying the hiking trails the preserve offers will be a great benefit to the people of Hubbard Lake. We are happy that we could be a help with this beautiful facility.”

The park is now open for the public to explore from sunrise until sunset. The following events are coming up:

¯ Aug. 21 from 10 a.m. to noon: Invasive Workshop — Learn how to manage invasive plant species through hands-on training and demonstration.

¯ Sept. 14: Trail Run and Yoga — Choose your path and your pace for an open run through the trails followed by a cool down yoga class at 10 a.m.

¯ Oct. 5 from 10 a.m. to noon: Watercolor Class — Capture fall colors in an outdoor watercolor class with artist-in-residence Sarah Tule.
