Pied Piper plant sale starts Friday
ALPENA — Pied Piper School is hosting its annual spring flower sale with lots of flowers and crafts for the spring season.
The sale starts Friday and runs through May 30. It will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Mondays through Fridays when school is in session. A special sale will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. this Saturday for Mother’s Day.
Teacher Janis Sahr said the event is 100% student driven and based on what the students can do. They learn how to follow directions, which gives them work skills to use in the future after they leave Pied Piper.
The students made crafts, including clocks, flower boards, decorated can holders to hold silverware, and signs. The theme for the crafts this year was rustic.
Sahr said this sale is more popular than the holiday sale the school hosts in December. She said that’s because of the excitement of spring and everybody wanting flowers.
“They always receive a high-quality product,” Sahr said of the people who go to the sale. “People come out year after year after year because of the students. They’re the ones that are going to ring you up, they’re the ones that are going to take your flowers to the car, so it’s the level of customer service they receive.”
Sahr said people will be well greeted at the sale and the students love seeing people come to the sale. She said the students feel empowered by selling something they know people will use at home.
Student James Walsh’s favorite part about the flower sale is bringing the plants into the school’s greenhouse and watering them.
“It’s exciting,” Walsh said about working in the greenhouse.
Student Brandon Merchant said his favorite part is taking care of the flowers and selling them to the people that come to the sale.
