Township sets meeting on US 41 underpass

By LISA BOWERS Journal Ishpeming Bureau MARQUETTE – Members of the Marquette Township Planning and Zoning Department and recreation committee will present an update Monday on the $2.25 million project to build an underpass beneath U.S. 41. The meeting will take place at 6 p.m. in the community room at the Marquette Township Community Center, at 1000 Commerce Drive. The meeting is intended provide information for any interested parties, such as potential public or private partners, trail users, motorized or non-motorized trail advocates and public officials. Project organizers will present background information for the 2019 project, including proposed plans, conceptual designs and an update on where the project stands financially and logistically, according to a township press release. “The overreaching goal of this project is to connect major motorized and non-motorized trail networks, North Star Academy and a rapidly developing commercial and entertainment district to the Iron Ore Heritage Trail with a safe, subsurface crossing of U.S. 41 in Marquette Township,” the release states. The township has received $2.4 million in conditional grant funding from several sources to build the project. The federal Transportation Alternatives Program, or TAP, is expected to provide about $1.35 million, MDOT is expected to award $450,000 and $272,000 will come from the Michigan Natural Resources Trust Fund, administered by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The Township would be responsible for nearly $178,000 in matching funds for the project, which consists of a multi-use tunnel under U.S. 41 east of the Menards store that would connect to a 10-foot-wide shared-use pathway running from the Iron Ore Heritage Trail to Marquette County Road 492.
