1970-71 AHS boys basketball team chosen as Team of the Year

The 1970-71 Alpena High School boys basketball team has been chosen as Team of the Year by the Alpena Sports Hall of Fame. The Wildcats went 14-4 in the regular season and won a district championship with wins over Bridgeport and Bay City Central. In the district title game, Alpena defeated Bay City Central 70-64. Alpena’s season eventually ended with a 71-63 loss in regional play to eventual state champion Flint Northern.

Butch Feher led Alpena with a single-season record 655 points on the season, an average of 31.1 per game. He scored a single-game high of 51 in a Feb. 1971 came against Clawson. Bob Marzean and Jim Illsley were two of Alpena’s top scorers as well with 18.1 points and 8.9 points per game respectively. The Wildcats had four seniors on that team–Ilsley, Marzean, Doug Weinkauf and Joe Klemens.
