Alpena JV hockey wins 2 at home

The Alpena Boosters U18 JV hockey team improved to 20-1-2 on the season after a pair of wins over Muskegon Mona Shores last weekend at Northern Lights Arena.

Entering the weekend, the Boosters had outscored their opponents 117-31 and topped Mona Shores 8-3 and 5-3.

In the opener on Saturday, the Sailors scored first, but Brett Nelson scored for Alpena to knot the game 1-1 after one period. Tanner Orban’s goal with an assist from Hunter Canute, put Alpena ahead 2-1 in the second period, but Mona Shores answered back quickly to tie the game 2-2.

The Boosters went ahead for good after goals from Orban and Jack Rea. Nelson and Orban finished the game with hat tricks and Rea scored twice. Canute had three assists, Nelson had two and Orban, Adam Nowicki, Taylor King, Josh Nowicki and Nick Worthington each had single assists. Jarrett Paul made 21 saves in the win.

A natural hat trick for Orban helped the Boosters defeat the Sailors again on Sunday, 5-3.

Alpena led 4-1 midway through the third period, but Mona Shores got a 5-on-3 advantage and made the most of it, scoring two goals just seconds apart.

Alpena went into the second intermission ahead 4-3 and Orban added an insurance goal in the third period.

The Boosters came out hot to start the game as Josh Nowicki and Jack Hamp scored first-period goals.

Just seconds into the middle frame, Orban scored on a slapshot to put Alpena 3-0. Mona Shores got on the board nearly 10 minutes later, but Alpena answered quickly to take a 4-1 lead.

Tanner Pokorzynski earned the win in net for Alpena and was assisted by Paul, who played the third period. Josh Nowicki had three assists, Nelson had two and Canute had one.

Alpena will compete in district play in St. Joesph on March 1-3. The Boosters will look to defend their two-year reign as league champion against Battle Creek, St. Joesph and Grand Rapids. Alpena will also play in Trenton the following weekend.
