Posen ends 2018 with win at Au Gres

AU GRES — The Posen boys basketball team came away with hard-fought victory on the road Monday, defeating Au Gres by a final score of 59-50.

Both teams got off to a slow start and the Wolverines led 8-5 after one quarter, but the offense picked up as Posen put together a solid second quarter to take a 27-20 lead into the break.

Playing behind a home crowd, Au Gres regained a lead after three quarters and led 42-41 heading into the fourth quarter.

Veteran leadership and a strong press defense for Posen took over in the fourth quarter and the Vikings were able to take a lead and hold on for a nine point win.

“It was a slow start and we had a tough time getting into an offensive rhythm,” Posen coach Chris Keller said. “We took control in the second quarter, but they were able to take a lead back from us. I told our upperclassmen that this was a time that they needed to step up and they did. Our press really took over late in the game.”

The Vikings were led by Jared Sharpe who scored 19 points. Jeremy Misiak recorded a double-double with 18 points and 11 rebounds and Wyatt Romel finished with eight points.

Posen improves to 3-3 overall and 2-1 in North Star League play.

The Vikings will be off until after the new year.

Alcona 56,

Whittemore-Prescott 46

WHITTEMORE — The Alcona boys basketball team traveled to Whittemore-Prescott on Monday and came away with a 56-46 win.

The Tigers had trouble rebounding early, but found a way to control the glass in the second half, which paved the way to victory.

“We left Whittemore with a win and that’s the most important stat. we didn’t rebound the ball particularly well in the first half, but did a better job of boxing out and controlling the glass in the second half and that really made the difference,” Alcona coach Ryan Bilbey said. “We did not shoot very well all night, but we hustled and caused a lot of turnovers defensively and kept the pace where we wanted it.”

Josh Kilbourn led the Tigers (3-1) with 16 points in the win. Damion Stewart finished with 15 points and Hunter Clark added 10 points.

Au Gres 46,

Atlanta 34

ATLANTA — The Atlanta boys basketball team fell to Au Gres by a final score of 46-34 on Friday.

The Huskies we led by Jaden Woods who scored 10 points and Aaron Cuzzort added nine points.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Posen 43,

Au Gres 30

AU GRES — The Posen girls basketball team got off to a fast start on Monday and defeated Au Gres in a North Star League contest 43-30.

The Vikings led 16-4 after the opening quarter and were able to hold onto the lead throughout the remainder of the game to secure a victory.

“We played better in the first half than we did in the second half, but overall I was pleased with the performance,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said.

The Vikings were led by Brooke Ciarkowski who scored 10 points and Riley Krajniak finished with nine points.

Posen is 2-4 overall on the season and 2-2 in NSL play.

The Vikings will be off until Dec. 27, when they travel to Rogers City for an NSL contest.

Alcona 43,

Tawas 30

TAWAS — The Alcona girls basketball team earned a 43-30 victory over Tawas on Friday for its third straight win.

Alcona (3-0) got out to a big lead early and was able to hang on throughout the course of the game.

The Tigers were led by Faith Wallenmaier who scored 16 points. Liz Henderson finished with 10 points and Megan Grove added nine points.

“We played great in the first half and let them back in a bit in the third,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “Our defensive intensity was the difference in tonight’s game.”
