Alcona girls cruise to win in season opener
LINCOLN–The Alcona girls basketball team got the start it was hoping for on Monday.
Senior Hailee Gordy and junior Megan Grove each scored 16 points and the Tigers overwhelmed Au Gres en route to a 58-17 win in their 2018-19 season opener at Alcona High School.
Alcona (1-0) raced out to a 14-5 lead after one quarter and pushed it to 33-5 at halfttime, outscoring the Wolverines 19-0 in the second quarter.
“I’ll take that for a start. I was hoping to get a good win under our belt where we played pretty decently,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “We’re kind of young, so I didn’t really know what was going to happen. Overall I’m pretty satisfied. I thought we shot the ball well tonight, which is a good sign for us.”
Feldhiser didn’t have much to worry about as Alcona ran the floor well and attacked the Wolverines from all over the floor, beating Au Gres with three-pointers, putbacks, fast breaks and wide open shots from the wing. It’s only one game into the season, but it gave Feldhiser and the Tigers a glimpse of how good they can be this year when things are going well.
Eight different players scored for Alcona in the win and it was the Tigers’ upperclassmen who led the way. In addition to big nights from Gordy and Grove, Alcona got eight points from senior Faith Wallenmaier as well as eight points from sophomore Liz Henderson.
“We ran the floor pretty well. For the first game, no complaints at all,” Feldhiser said. “Our four returners from last year are playing pretty well and I think they’ll bring our four sophomores along and we’re going to be just fine.”
Brianna Freehling led Au Gres with seven points and Kennadi Zeien and Marlee Walker each had four. Alcona pushed its lead to 44-11 after three quarters and continued to hound Au Gres on the defensive end and continued to ride that momentum to victory.
Alcona hosts Posen next Tuesday.
