Lumberjacks run like the wind at Firebird Classic

GRAYLING — When the weather is awful and the course is extremely tough, the 2018 Alpena Community College Cross-Country team seem to run their best. With wind gusts up to 30 mph along with the cold and rain, the Lumberjack men ran one of their best races in team history. ACC took third place overall out of eight teams Friday night at the Kirtland Firebird Classic held at Hanson Hills in Grayling. The Lumberjacks finished behind nationally ranked Lansing Community College and Grand Rapids Community College while beating Kellogg CC, St. Clair CC, Oakland CC, Kirtland CC and Wayne County CC.

“For the past seven years, I have been preaching to stick together during races. That is how you win in Cross-Country. Today we had our second through fifth runner within six places and 52 seconds,” ACC coach Mark Jacobs said. “We beat teams that we weren’t predicted to beat due the fact we stuck with our race plan.”

Tylor Ross (Fairview) continued his outstanding season finishing as ACC’s top runner and finishing ninth overall with a time of 29:30 on the hilly course. Behind Ross were Caleb Burger (Alpena) 31:20, John Siegert (Ludington) 31:40, Mason Kaniszewski (Tawas) 31:55, Aidan Francis (Memphis) 32:12, Dallin Toth (Alpena) 34:26, and Camren DeCaire (Alpena) 37:30.

“We are exactly where we need to be at mid-season,” Jacobs said. “The practices will get tougher which my guys understand. That is the way we get to the next level.”

The team has next weekend off and will travel to Lansing Community College on October 6.
