Four area baseball players earn All-State recognition

Onaway’s Trevor Wregglesworth throws a pitch against Hillman in a district championship game at Gilpin Field in Rogers City.

Four area baseball players were recognized for their efforts during the 2018 season.

Onaway’s Trevor Wregglesworth, Hillman’s Kyler Moir, Posen’s Jared Sharpe and Rogers City’s Kaleb Budnik each earned All-State honors this year.

Wregglesworth earned Division 4 first team All-State honors as an infielder. The Onaway senior ace pitched the Cardinals to the regional championship game and dominated opposing batters all season.

Wregglesworth shut out Hillman in the district championship and earned a victory against Mio in a regional semfinal game. Unfortunately, the Cardinals came up short in the regional championship game, falling to Gaylord St. Mary.

The Alma College bound pitcher took his game to another level during the 2018 season after earning second team All-State honors a year ago as he finished the year with some elite numbers on the mound this season. Wregglesworth finished 10-4 and racked up a single season school record of 142 strikeouts, while carrying a 0.87 Earned Run Average which was also a single season school record across 80 1/3 innings. Wregglesworth allowed just 31 hits on the season and walked only 13 batters.

As good as Wregglesworth was on the mound, he expanded his game by putting up solid numbers at the plate.

Wregglesworth batted .524 with 38 RBI and 27 runs scored. He also collected 44 hits, drew 19 walks and had an On Base Percentage of .612, along with hitting two home runs When Wregglesworth wasn’t on the mound he spent time behind the dish and played other infield positions for the Cardinals.

Along with the two single season records, Wregglesworth cemented himself as one of the top, if not the top player in Onaway baseball history as he leaves Onwaway with a handful of career records.

Wregglesworth has the most hits in a career (119), tied for the most doubles (22), RBI (81). On the mound, he walks away with career records in wins with 27, 235 innings pitched, 315 strikeouts and eight career no-hitters all over a three year span.

Moir earned second team All-State honors as a first baseman.

The Hillman senior was steady at the plate and on the mound during his final season wearing the orange and black.

Moir wrapped up a special career with a stellar senior campaigne.

Moir finished the season with a 6-3 record, recorded 90 strikeouts and ended with a 1.17 ERA. Moir allowed just 29 hits out of the 231 batters he faced throughout the season.

At the plate, Moir was the Tigers top offensive player as he led Hillman with a .400 batting average, 27 RBI, 11 doubles, 22 walks, ended with a .538 On Base Percentage. Moir record 32 hits and scored 28 runs which were both good for second best on the team and he struck out just twice in 80 at-bats.

Moir will be attending Bay College in the Fall.

Budnik also earned second team All-State honors as an infielder.

Budnik flashed some serious leather throughout the season and made a handful of great defensive plays.

The juniors defensive skills were just as strong as his offensive skills as he continues to mold himself into a special player for the Hurons.

Budnik finished the year batting .481, had 21 RBI, scored 15 runs, hit nine doubles and stole seven bases.

Budnik continues the tradition of Rogers City players earning All-State honors as the Hurons have had at least on All-State player each of the past four years and 14 of the last 15.

Sharpe earned second team All-State honors as an outfielder, despite doing much of his damage on the mound.

Sharpe excelled as Posen’s ace pitcher as the junior came up big in a pre-district game against Rogers City back in late May.

The Hurons swept the regular season series against Posen, but Sharpe came through when his team needed him and allowed just three hits the Vikings pre-district victory.

Sharpe finished the year with a 6-3 record, a 0.77 ERA, allowing just six earned runs all season and tallied 100 punch outs.

At the plate, Sharpe batted .509, collecting 29 hits. He scored 20 runs, drove in eight and stole five bases.

Sharpe will look to build off a solid junior season on the diamond and continue being a force on the mound next year.
