As the weather begins to heat up, so does the recruiting process for Alpena High School football standout Logan Guthrie.

The soon to be senior running back and linebacker spent much of his junior year attending camps and showcases with a dream of playing collegiate football at the Division 1 level.

After attending Central Michigan University’s annual football camp last weekend, Guthrie’s dreams are looking more and more like a reality each day.

Guthrie got a taste of elite level camps several months ago and attended an Elite Camp at Michigan State University the day prior to going to CMU. His efforts have since been noticed by a handful of college coaches from across all levels.

Guthrie went to the CMU camp last weekend and shined.

“The CMU camp was a very awesome experience. I thought that I would underperform due to being at the MSU Elite Camp the previous day,” Guthrie said. “The weather was hot as well, but some how, I put up some of the best testing numbers that I’ve ever done.”

After excelling at the CMU camp, Chippewa head coach John Bonamego took notice and immediately jumped at the opportunity to further talk with Guthrie about possible plans for him and his CMU football program.

After Guthrie’s performance in front of Bonamego, the CMU head coach pulled Guthrie to the side.

“Coach Bono was very impressed with my numbers and followed me around most of the camp,” Guthrie said. “After my performance in front of him, he pulled me to the side and told me he wanted me to hop on his golf cart and ride up to his office with him along with my high school coach Aaron Sims.”

The three went into Bonamego’s office and the CMU coach talked football and about Guthrie’s summer plans.

After a little small talk, Bonamego got straight to the point.

Bonamego told Guthrie that he could see him being a big part of the Chippewa defense during his freshman year as a linebacker.

Bonamego and his staff have been in contact with Guthrie for quite some time now and Bonamego offered Guthrie a scholarship to play football at CMU.

“I never expected the reality of being in this position, but now it feels like those childhood dreams are all coming true,” Guthrie said. “Once you get one big offer, it’s like a domino effect with other schools and it’s already showing.”

Guthrie has also received offers from Northern Michigan University and Ferris State, but the offer from CMU is the first Division 1 he has received. Guthrie has also received in home visits from Michigan Tech and Air Force. He has been contacted by Ole Miss, Michigan State, Wayne State, Toledo, Miam Ohio, Kent State, Eastern Michigan and Lawrence Tech

With his senior season still left to play, Guthrie continues to put in countless hours of work so he is ready to be a major part of Alpena’s Wing-T offense and be a force on the defensive side of the ball as well.

“All of the credit goes to my head coach (Aaron Sims). He put me under the spotlight for all of these colleges and in return I bust my butt for him and now everything is becoming a reality because of him,” Guthrie said. “The only things coming out of me after this offer is a harder work ethic, more determination and a greed for the upcoming season. It’s all up from here now.”
