Lumberjacks blanked in twinbill vs. Schoolcraft

LIVONIA — Errors doomed the Alpena Community College softball team on Wednesday as the Lumberjacks were shut out in both games of a doubleheader against Schoolcraft, losing game one 3-0 and dropping the nightcap 9-0.

The two teams were scoreless through four and a half innings in the opener as Alpena starting pitcher Kelsey Huffman was cruising as she finished the game with nine strikeouts.

The bottom of the fifth proved to be the difference as Schoolcraft scored all three runs on two costly Lumberjack errors.

At the plate, Alpena was led by Morgan Armon who went 2-for-3 with a double.

In the nightcap, Schoolcraft played small ball and once again errors haunted the Lumberjacks as they were unable respond to Schoolcraft’s small ball approach and ability to bunt.

Huffman started game two and struck out five.

The Lumberjacks were held to just three hits as Paige Chmura, Elise Leeck and Monica Bartz each had a hit apiece.

Alpena falls to 8-26 on the year and will play its final doubleheader of the season today when it plays two more games against Schoolcraft at Madonna University.
