Hillman softball team tops Atlanta; Posen softball gets back to .500

HILLMAN–Andrea Taratuta and McKenna Hiveley each earned a win and the Hillman softball team topped Atlanta in a North Star League twinbill on Monday.

Hillman won the opener 11-1 in five innings and took the nightcap 15-1 in five innings.

In the opener, Taratuta struck out seven and allowed one run.

At the plate, Brooke Jones was 3-for-4, Jade LaFleche was 3-for-3 and Allyn Jencks had a triple.

Jade Forrester struck out five for Atlanta and Halle Armock was 2-for-2.

In the second game, Hiveley fanned four batters and allowed a run while walking two.

Taratuta was 2-for-2; LaFleche was 3-for-3 with a home run and two triples; Jencks was 2-for-3 with two triples and Autumn Jones was 1-for-2 with a triple.

Armock struck out six for Atlanta and Armock and Dezyrae Cohoon each had a hit.

“It’s the best I’ve seen them play this season,” Atlanta coach Lisa Marlatt said. “We’re a young team and this was a major, major improvement.”

Hillman improves to 13-5 overall and 4-0 in league play.

The Tigers play at Posen on Thursday while Atlanta plays at Alcona.

Posen takes 2 from Hale

POSEN–The Posen softball team got back to the .500 mark on Monday, taking two North Star League games from Hale.

Posen won the opener 4-3 and won the second game 9-4.

In the opener, Posen (10-10) scored a run in the third inning and three more in the fourth for a 4-1 lead. Hale rallied late, but ultimately fell short.

Arianne Chojacki earned the win for Posen, allowing one earned run on seven hits with three strikeouts and five walks.

At the plate, Hannah Stone, Chojnacki, Riley Krajniak and Brooke Ciarkowski each had two hits for Posen. Chojnacki, Cami LaTulip, Brianna Kuffel and Faith A. Romel each had an RBI.

“We’re getting a lot of experience and rounding into shape as we get closer to June,” Posen coach Wayne Karsten said.

Hale scored a pair of runs in the first inning of the nightcap, but Posen rallied for six runs in the third inning and three more in the fourth.

Makayla Kamyszek earned the win, allowing three earned runs on 11 hits with five walks and four strikeouts in six innings.

Kamyszek had two hits and three RBI; Kuffel, Ciarkowski and Stone each had two hits and Chojnacki had two hits and two RBI.

Posen hosts Hillman on Thursday.

Hurons inch closer to title

ROGERS CITY–The Rogers City softball team moved closer to winning the North Star League’s Big Dipper division title with a pair of wins over Oscoda on Monday.

Rogers City won the opener 5-1 and won the second game 12-1.

Oscoda scored a run in the top of the first inning in the opener, but Rogers City answered back quickly as Jayna Hance hit a leadoff home run and the Hurons scored three runs during their turn at the plate.

Hance had a double to go along with her home run and Kayla Rabeau had two hits and two RBI; Taylor Fleming had two hits, Amanda Wirgau had a hit and two RBI and Catheryn Hart added a hit for Rogers City.

Hance earned the win, allowing a run on four hits with seven strikeouts.

Briannah Conly led Oscoda with two hits.

Kyrsten Altman earned the win in the nightcap, allowing a run on two hits with six strikeouts.

Hance had two hits; Rabeau had two hits and three RBI; Hannah Fleming had a hit and an RBI; Wirgau had two hits and two RBI; Hart had a hit and two RBI and Alissa Bowden had a hit.

Rogers City improves to 16-2 overall and 6-0 in league play. The Hurons wrap up league play at home against Whittemore-Prescott on Thursday.

BASEBALL

Posen splits with Hale

POSEN–The Posen baseball team team split a North Star League doubleheader with Hale on Monday, winning the opener 2-1 and losing the nightcap 7-5.

Posen won a walk-off error in the opener, allowing Chase Dubie to score the winning run. Dubie scored after Mark Wisniewski sacrificed and reached on an error.

Hale led 1-0 until the fourth inning when Posen scored after Avery Werth singled to plate Mark Wisniewski.

Jared Sharpe earned the win after allowing a run on five hits over six innings with five strikeouts.

Werth and Wisniewski each had a hit for Posen.

Posen battled in the nightcap, but fell short in its comeback attempt.

Hale took a 4-0 after one inning and added a run in the fourth inning and two more in the fifth.

Posen scored a run in the fourth and three in the fifth to make it 7-4, but managed just one more run in the sixth inning.

Wisniewski and Sharpe each had two hits for Posen and Sharpe and Jared Kamyszek each had two RBIs.

In the fifth inning, Sharpe doubled to score Lucas Stone. Three batters later, Kamyszek tripled to score Werth and Wisniewski.

In the sixth inning, Sharpe singled to score Jory Zdybel.

George Kroll went 2/3 of an inning for Posen, allowing three hits and four runs with one strikeout. Kamyszek pitched the final 5 1/3 innings in relief, allowing two runs on four hits with one walk and five strikeouts.

Hillman takes 2 from Atlanta

Hillman blanks Atlanta

HILLMAN–The Hillman baseball team shut down Atlanta in a pair of North Star League games on Monday, beating the Huskies 11-0 in both games.

Kyler Moir earned the win for the Tigers (10-6, 4-0 NSL) in the opener, striking out nine and walking one while pitching a one-hit shutout.

At the plate, Gage Steinke was 1-1 for Hillman with two runs scored and an RBI; Moir was 2-for-3 with a double, a triple, an RBI and two runs scored; Kory Henigan was 1-for-2 with a run scored and an RBI; Caine Hunt was 2-for-2 with two doubles, a run scored and two RBI; Fisher Linseman was 1-for-1 with a run scored; Wyatt Barrie was 1-for-1 with a run scored and Jaden Dove was 1-for-1 with an RBI.

In the nightcap, Jared Juergens earned the win, striking out eight and allowing one hit.

Evan Davis was 1-for-2 with two RBI; Moir was 1-for-2 with two runs scored and an RBI; Hunt was 1-for-1 with a run scored; Nic Taratuta was 1-for-1 with a run scored and an RBI; Linseman had two RBI; Isaac Morrison was 1-for-1 with a run scored and two RBI and Nash Steinke was 1-for-3 with a run scored.

TRACK AND FIELD

Hillman’s Banks betters 800 record

MANCELONA–Brandon Banks broke his own record in the 800 run and the Hillman boys track team finished third in the Mancelona Invitational on Monday.

Banks finished in 2:05.24 in the 800 run and also won the 1,600 run (4:52.05) for the Tigers, who finished fifth with 95 points, behind Mancelona (184) and Johannesburg-Lewiston (130).

Gunner Mellingen and Billy Kolcan had multiple wins for Hillman as well. Mellingen won the 100 dash (11.82) and 200 dash (24.18) while Kolcan paced the field in the 300 hurdles (41.78), high jump (6-2) and long jump (18-1 1/2).

Other top finishers for the Hillman boys were: Matt Hunt in the 100 dash (3rd, 11.90); the 800 relay team of Banks, Mellingen, Kolcan and Hunt (2nd, 3:51.64) and Mellingen win the long jump (2nd, 17-11).

Lyndsey Ryba and Kassie Holford each had a win for the Hillman girls team, which finished fifth with 60 points, behind Joburg (232), Petoskey (65 1/2), Gaylord St. Mary (64) and Mancelona (61).

Holford won the shot put (28-9) and Ryba won the 200 dash (28.24).

Other top finishers for the Hillman girls were: Emilee Noffze in the 400 dash (5th, 1:14.94); Madison Swift in the 100 hurdles (5th, 19.60); the 400 relay team of Swift, Noffze, Ryba and Alexis Mutschler (3rd, 56.35); the same team also took fourth place (2:03.49) in the 800 relay; Holford in the discus (3rd, 81-10 1/2); Ryba in the high jump (2nd, 4-8) and Mutschler in the long jump (4th, 12-9).

Jaclyn Nash had a win in the discus for Onaway (99-8) and Teddy Peters had three top five finishes.

Peters took fourth in the pole vault (10-0), third in the 3,200 run (11:27.56) and fifth in the 1,600 run (5:05.76).

Onaway’s boys team finished eighth with 34 points and Onaway’s girls team finished sixth with 52 points.
