Alpena falls to Saginaw Heritage in title game

SAGINAW — The Alpena baseball team traveled to Saginaw for a tournament over the weekend and earned runner-up honors after beating Leland 2-0 in game one before falling to Saginaw Heritage 5-1 in the title game.

Bruz Copping tossed a gem in game one, going six innings, allowing just two hits and struck out five. Chandler Lantz pitched a perfect seventh inning to record the save.

Alpena opened the scoring in the first inning when Kyle VanDusen scored on a ground out from Copping and later, Clay Donajkowski took home on a throw to second base on a Wildcat steal attempt.

The Wildcats met up with Heritage in the championship game and fell by a final of 5-1.

Lars MacArthur got hit with the loss as he gave up four hits, walked three and struck out a batter over three innings. Lucas Crosby also tossed three innings, didn’t allow a hit and fanned two batters.

Alpena was held to six hits in the game. MacArthur had two hits. Owen Limback scored the Wildcats lone run and Lantz doubled in the loss.

Alpena is 6-6-1 overall on the year and will host Petoskey tomorrow in a Big North Conference doubleheader.

Alpena track team takes first at Falcon Invitational

OGEMAW-HEIGHTS — The Alpena High track and field team earned first place honors at the Falcon Invitational on Friday at Ogemaw-Heights.

The Wildcats competed against 14 other schools, Brown City, Gladwin, Harrison, Houghton Lake, Leroy Pine River, Alcona, Ogemaw, Oscoda, Petoskey, Roscommon, Sanford-Meridian, Standish-Sterling, Tawas and Whittemore-Prescott.

The Alpena boys finished first with a score of 120.5. The Wildcats were followed by Whittemore (106), Roscommon (76.75), Petoskey (64.75), Ogemaw (59.75), Leroy (55.5), Standish (40.5), Gladwin (40.5), Harrison (27.5), Sanford-Meridian (26.75), Alcona (20), Oscoda (10.5), Houghton Lake (6), Brown City (6), Tawas (2).

The Alpena girls also finished first with a score of 123.33, followed by Petoskey (116.33), Brown City (96), Gladwin (88), Sanford-Meridian (54.33), Ogemaw (36), Roscommon (36), Leroy (25.5) Alcona (24.4), Standish (21), Harrison (14), Fairview (11), Oscoda (8), Houghton Lake (8), tawas (1).

Two meet records were set as Alpena’s Josh Smith won the 1600 run with a time of 4:28.33 and Gabe Bullis set a new mark in the Pole Vault at 14-3.
