Plowman scores twice as Wildcats top Blue Devils

GAYLORD–Colby Plowman scored twice and the Alpena High hockey connected twice on the power-play on the way to a 4-3 win over Gaylord on Friday.

Alpena (11-4-3) broke a 1-1 tie in the second period with two goals and then held off a Gaylord rally in the third period.

Charlie Halleck and Cody Sumerix (power-play) each added a goal for Alpena.

Cooper Black made 15 saves in the win and Kyle VanDusen, Owen Limback and Mitch Agius each had two assists. Nate Cosbitt and Keegan Matthews each had one assist.

“I thought we were pretty good. We fought through some adversity and Gaylord did a nice job trapping, which we’ll have to work on as we see them a few more times this season,” Alpena coach Chris Limback said. “I thought Gaylord did a nice job.”

Alpena hosts Traverse City West on Friday.

BASKETBALL

Alcona 51, Oscoda 41

LINCOLN–Taylor Livingston scored 17 points, Megan Grove added 12 and the Alcona girls basketball team defeated Oscoda 51-41 on Friday in a North Star League contest.

Alcona (4-5, 3-3 NSL) led 37-29 after three quarters and outscored the Owls 14-12 in the final eight minutes to preserve the win.

“We played a complete game against a good team and got a big win tonight. I thought we played good defense and did a much better job handling their pressure,” Alcona coach Mark Feldhiser said. “We as a nice balanced offensive output.”  

Katelyn Etherton led Oscoda with 18 points.

Brianna Fogle added nine points for Alcona,  Hailee Gordy had six and Faith Wallenmaier had five.

Alcona plays at Fairview on Tuesday.

Posen 55, Fairview 17

FAIRVIEW–Cami LaTulip had 24 points and Brooke Ciarkowski scored a career-high 22 points as the Posen girls basketball team defeated Fairview 55-17 on Friday.

Posen (4-5, 3-2 North Star League) led 14-14 after one quarter and pushed its lead to 28-4 by halftime.

“We played well, passed well and did a good job overall,” Posen coach Karl Momrik said. “It feels good to get another win.”

Posen’s JV team defeated Fairview 45-24.

Posen plays at Oscoda on Monday.

Hale 56, Atlanta 14

ATLANTA–The Atlanta girls basketball team lost to Hale on Friday, 56-14.

Jacey Berndt led Atlanta with seven points and two assists and Jordan Kobielus added four points, seven rebounds and three assists.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Hale 73, Atlanta 67

ATLANTA–Hale managed to stay a few steps ahead of the Atlanta boys basketball team on Friday and walked away with a 73-67 win in a North Star League matchup.

Hale led 19-14 after one quarter, 36-24 at halftime and 56-44 after three quarters.

Austin Corbin had 22 points, 13 rebounds and five assists for Atlanta (2-7) and Aaron Cuzzort added 18 points.

“In the second quarter, we had quite a bit of mistakes,” Atlanta coach Kevin Haren said. “We really rallied back in the fourth quarter and cut it to two, but we had a couple of shots that didn’t go our way and we had to foul.”
