Onaway boys top Mancelona; Hillman beats Owls in NSL tilt

MANCELONA–A fast start from Kevin Pearson and contributions from the entire roster led the Onaway boys basketball team to victory on Thursday.

Pearson scored 11 of his 15 points in the first quarter and every player on Onaway’s roster scored as the Cardinals defeated Mancelona 64-53.

Trevor Wregglesworth scored 25 points and added nine rebounds for the Cardinals (3-4, 3-2 Ski Valley) who led 21-13 after one quarter and kept building their lead from there.

“I think on defense tonight we had huge improvements. We were able to keep pressure on them and I thought we rotated on defense very well,” Onaway coach Eddy Szymoniak said. “Offensively, we moved the ball well and attacked the basket well.”

Pearson added four rebounds and was praised for his efforts to help get Onaway going to start the game.

“Kevin Pearson set the tone for us with 11 first quarter points and we fed off that,” Szymoniak said. “He’s a freshman, but tonight he played like he’s been here three years.”

Lucas Tollini added seven points and seven rebounds for Onaway.

Onaway plays at Bellaire on Tuesday.

Hillman 72,

Oscoda 56

OSCODA–Defense led the way for the Hillman boys basketball team as the Tigers defeated Oscoda 72-56 on Thursday.

Despite a 30-point night from Oscoda’s Grant Huebel, Hillman (7-0, 4-0 North Star League) clamped down defensively and limited the Owls late to walk away with the win.

Brandon Banks had 26 points and four assists for Hillman and Jared Juergens had 19 points and four assists.

“I thought we played one of our best games defensively in the half court. We didn’t generate a lot off our press, but we did a good job holding Oscoda to one shot,” Hillman coach Eric Muszynski said.

Huebel scored 20 points in the first half and Hillman led 38-27 at the break. He was limited in the second half however and Hillman outscored Oscoda 34-29 in the second half.

Owen Franklin added 11 points for Oscoda.

Billy Kolcan added 14 points and seven rebounds for Hillman, Andrew Funk had nine points and Nic Taratuta had six rebounds and three blocks.

“It was a great, great team effort and we played all 11 guys, so we showed some of our depth,” Muszynski said.

Hillman plays Rogers City next Thursday.

Oscoda’s JV team defeated Hillman 52-32. Gunner Mellingen led Hillman with 11 points.

W-P 40, Alcona 39

LINCOLN–After a long layoff, the Alcona boys basketball team came up just short of victory in its first action of 2018.

Dana Thorson and Kyle Colton each scored 10 points and Whittemore-Prescott edged the Tigers 40-39 in a North Star League matchup at Alcona High School on Thursday.

“We played pretty well defensively all games but some unforced turnovers hurt us. We struggled offensively most of the night. The whole team played hard all game and I’m proud of that,” Alcona coach Ryan Bilbey said. “We were down late and crawled back into it and had a chance at the end with the last possession but just didn’t connect.”

Conner McCoy paced Alcona (6-1) with 11 points, Alex Stephenson had nine and Damion Stewart and Antavius Mikazes each added six.
